Independent Daily Living & Life Skills
Independence
Independent daily living is the ability to manage everyday tasks and activities independently. Under the NDIS framework, developing life skills is essential in enabling individuals to live independently. These life skills encompass many abilities, including personal hygiene, cooking, budgeting, organisation, and mobility.
Life Skills
Focusing on these life skills enables individuals to effectively navigate the demands of daily life, fostering greater independence and self-reliance. This support is provided through personalised plans crafted to address each participant’s specific needs and interests, ensuring the assistance is tailored to their unique requirements.
Moreover, promoting community engagement and participation is integral to developing life skills. We aim to facilitate activities that enable individuals to connect with their communities, such as attending events, social outings, and joining interest-based groups. Additionally, respite housing and overnight stays are crucial in offering participants a safe and welcoming environment to develop their skills further while enjoying recreational activities.
Ultimately, the goal is to empower individuals to lead fulfilling lives by equipping them with the necessary skills and support to live independently within their communities.
Living independently demands diverse skills, such as personal hygiene, mobility, meal preparation, time management, financial planning, and maintaining a clean living space.
How We Support You with Independent Living
We offer support in the comfort of a client’s home, particularly for young individuals. Alternatively, we have a dedicated facility where clients can learn essential life skills, simulating the experience of living away from home. By offering hands-on experience away from home, clients gain the necessary knowledge and abilities to live independently in their residences or apartments.
To teach and reinforce independent living skills, our approach involves:
Collaborating
We collaborate with allied health teams.
Routine
Establishing consistent routines with clients.
Striving
Implementing a blended approach to support workers in functioning cohesively and striving to achieve the client’s goals.
Our Personalised Plans
We offer personalised plans for each client by actively involving them in planning. Our approach ensures that the plan is entirely focused on the individual and that they fully own it. We evaluate progress and success by conducting care team meetings, having in-depth discussions with participants and their families, and using other relevant assessment tools.
Social & Community Participation
We provide various activities to help clients engage with their community. Our services include assisting with appointments, grocery shopping, travelling, going out for coffee or meals, and attending family events. We also help with sporting adventures and various other activities. The options are limitless, and we are committed to supporting participants in staying connected with their community.
We help clients find and join community groups or activities through various methods, such as searching for social events online, in newspapers, or through word of mouth. We also support them in researching specific interests and encourage them to explore and visit different community groups or activities to find the right fit.
Client Success Story
One of our success stories about community participation.
We have a remarkable success story of community participation. A child with sensory overload found it challenging to be in large crowds or part of a team. Despite this, the child was interested in a team sport they had been watching on TV. With consistent support from the right blend of support workers, this child is now thriving in their second sports season, fully participating in a team environment.
It’s truly inspiring to see their growth and success.
Our Customised
Support Approach
Our approach involves customising support to cater to each client’s needs and interests. We emphasise the importance of fully integrating the participant and worker, forming a unique team tailored to their requirements. We never assign an unfamiliar worker to a client, ensuring a personalised experience for everyone involved.
Matching Activities
to Our Clients
Currently, we do not organise group activities or outings. Group activities should be enjoyable for everyone involved, and the clients should be well-matched to encourage the development of friendships rather than just being placed in activities. Our main group activities involve Equine Assisted Well-being during school holidays, and we are also planning to offer occasional weekend activities soon!
Domestic Assistance
We offer various domestic assistance services, including cooking, guided cleaning, and grocery shopping, ensuring that our clients receive comprehensive support for their household needs.
Our approach to ensuring the quality and reliability of our services is rooted in our workers’ passion for cooking. We integrate this passion with the preferences and aspirations of our clients who want to learn to cook. Our team maintains constant communication with our clients and their families to understand their needs better and identify opportunities for improvement.
Our management is personally familiar with all the families we serve, which allows us to provide a more personalised and attentive service.
Collaborative Process
We assess each clients domestic needs through a collaborative process involving input from their families, allied health teams, and our staff. We continually gather feedback and work as a team to address each individual’s specific needs.
Person-centred, & Flexible
We provide personalised, person-centred, flexible scheduling for all domestic assistance services. We train our staff to deliver these services effectively through in-house and external training provided by allied health teams as needed. We provide comprehensive training to ensure that our staff are well-equipped to meet the needs of our clients.
Respite Housing & Overnight Stays
Our respite housing facilities are designed to provide families with a warm and inviting environment. These homes are not typical institutional facilities; they are cosy, fun, and family-oriented spaces promoting comfort and relaxation.
We can do just about anything that is required or requested. Some stays are directed by the families and health teams for skill building, and others are for just respite and fun, which we cater for, and this is client-led. We can go for drives, movies, fishing, craft days, bike rides, and concerts—it’s a never-ending list.
Our priority is to provide the best possible experience for our clients to help them achieve their desired outcomes.
Comfort and Safety
The comfort and safety of our participants are a top priority during their stay. Each bedroom has double beds featuring high-quality mattresses and linen to ensure a good night’s sleep. We also have salt lamps throughout the homes, creating a warm and cosy atmosphere for our guests. Our backyards are child-friendly and include a fun jungle gym for outdoor play and enjoyment.
Customising Our Care
Customising respite care to the specific needs of each client involves discussions with their families, care teams, and other relevant stakeholders.
This collaborative approach ensures that the care provided is tailored to meet each individual’s unique requirements.
Our Qualified Staff
The staff providing overnight care have qualifications in disability, community services, and child care.
They also have valuable lived experience from having children of their own.
Equine Assisted Well-being
Equine Assisted Well-Being involves facilitating a strong connection, heightened awareness, and calmness between a person and a horse to improve the overall well-being of individuals. This practice allows people dealing with physical, cognitive, behavioural, mental health, or emotional challenges to find healing, develop resilience, build self-confidence, learn patience, nurture compassion, and take on responsibility by leveraging the unique bond with horses.
Our Structured Activities
During Equine Assisted Well-Being sessions, we structure our activities to be planned and unplanned, focusing on the client’s needs and interests. The sessions offer many benefits, including boosting confidence, leadership, and communication skills, reducing anxiety, and promoting overall well-being. Clients also have opportunities for mindfulness and self-reflection, which can lead to reduced blood pressure and improved fine and gross motor skills. Additionally, the sessions focus on developing balance, control, and empathetic awareness and promoting self-regulation and proprioceptive awareness. Clients may also experience sensory tolerance, visual processing skills, and cognitive attention and concentration improvements.

Client Success Story
The Benefits of Equine Assisted Well-being.
One of our clients has experienced the benefits of Equine Assisted Well-being. At ten years old, she has impaired vision, cerebral palsy, and autism. She has a huge personality and spreads joy wherever she goes. She had a fear of animals and anything she couldn’t see. One day, we brought her to our facility for an introduction, and she was very nervous. However, with sensory-based considerations, including an introduction to noise and smells, we aimed to ease her and make her feel comfortable. With every visit, we could see her growth as she became more and more relaxed. More recently, she even wanted to hug, brush, and interact with the horse.
The horse, Frankie, who is 20 years old, seemed to understand her and allowed her to cuddle his leg and nuzzle into his shoulder, creating a deep connection. We have a horse simulator, which we will support her with for further introduction to the equine experience.
Led by Equine
Endorsed Practitioners
Our sessions are led by Equine Assisted Well-being Endorsed practitioners with remarkable skill sets. They are well-versed in trauma-informed and neuro-affirming practices, allowing them to provide tailored support to meet the specific needs of each client. Our diverse team consists of an Equestrian instructor and Disability Support Worker who bring experience working with horses and individuals with physical and neurodiverse disabilities. Their combined expertise enables an authentic well-being approach to Equine Assisted Well-being, making it an exceptional wellness option.
Our Client Safety &
Well-being Protocols
To ensure the safety and well-being of clients during our sessions, we always have at least two practitioners present with a client. Sometimes, we have extended this to three practitioners, particularly when a client has behavioural issues. Our priority is to provide the best possible experience for our clients to help them achieve their desired outcomes. All our horses are safe and experienced, our staff members are highly professional, and our facilities are maintained to the highest safety standards.
